Hi Rob,
Firstly thanks for all your help and encouragement in getting my licence. I enjoyed the time spent with you and John during the various training days, I felt you got the balance between formal instruction and enjoyment just right. I have no hesitation at all in recommending you to friends who want to go down the same road and learn to ride.
We spoke about what bike I would buy and one of the thoughts was that I would probably end up with something in a box. In the end I finished up with something that probably should have come in a box, it is a 1997 VFR 750 FV that belonged to a young guy who was unfortunately taken seriously ill about a year ago. The bike has stood for best part of a year (and MOTs suggest it didn't see much action for at least a couple of years) and when I picked it up showed no sign of running or even rolling! A lot of folk had looked at it and walked away, I guess I ended up buying it a something of an act of charity in the end. Getting a bit deeper into the bike I found various other bits of evidence that suggested that whilst it was relatively low mileage (~24k) it has had an interesting past....various wires goig nowhere, the odd bit missing and so on. Anyway I enjoy a challenge and it is certainly a great way to get to know a bike so here is photo of me with the VFR in a
state of undress.....the bike that is, not me!
It is now running, I have freed of the stuck brakes and even had a sneaky run round the block on it. Still one or two jobs to sort out, the biggest is probably to fix the fairing as this has had a bit of a hard life as well. When it is ready I will run round on it and we can have a laugh about doing it the hard way!
I would like to put it in for a service once it is roadworthy, this is mainly to get a view about whether it would pass an MOT, to balance the carbs (I don't have the kit) and at the same time get any views from the mechanic about its general condition. Have you any recommendations for a nearby mechanic? Someone who could come to the house would be ideal.
Anyway, thanks again for the great training experience, I suspect RJH would take a bit of beating!
Looking forward to dropping by one afternoon,
Ian
